Our Legendary Nutritive Formula is named after Shou Xing, the Chinese deity of longevity, whose name means "Star of Long Life." In art he appears aged and bald with a knotty staff; and though he carries with him the Peach of Immortality, he never actually took a bite of it. Legend says Shou Xing began as sickly boy called Zhao Yen, who was doomed to die at the age of 19. On the advice of a seer, he entered a certain field at a certain time, armed with a packed lunch for the two checker players he was to encounter there. Warned by the seer not to speak a word, Zhao Yen silently offered the checker players spring rolls and wine. The two players gratefully accepted his offering, and after consuming it, revealed themselves to be the deities of birth (God of the North Pole) and death (God of the South Pole). In appreciation for the boy’s display of the proper respect, they reversed his allotted lifespan from 19 to 91, and then gifted him with immortality.

Astragalocide is derived from the perennial herb Astragalus, used for thousands of years as a sweet, warming, restorative tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The ancient Chinese classified Astragalus as an adaptogen with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties. An adaptogen is any herb that is believed to increase general resistance to stress and disease, and/or normalize disturbances in the body’s ability to balance itself. Astragalus has been shown in several studies to make the immune system more active and is used to help with aging, increase energy and stimulate the immune system in cases of the common cold, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, upper respiratory infections, fibromyalgia, anemia, HIV/AIDS and certain types of cancer and patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Recent research has shown that Astragalocide may “turn on” an enzyme in the body called telomerase (hTERT). Telomerase is usually “turned off” in most adult cells, except in immune, egg, and sperm cells. Telomerase (hTERT) acts to maintain or lengthen telomeres. Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences that protect cells from deterioration and extend the lifespan of chromosomal DNA. Over time, telomeres shorten due to wear, tear and cell division. Researchers have discovered correlations between telomere length and susceptibility to certain aging-related diseases, like cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks, atherosclerosis, and strokes), diabetes, and cancer.

Schizandra, Schisandra chinensis, is a fruiting plant known as the “quintessence of adaptogenic Chinese tonic herbs,” with supposed longevity properties and is said to stimulate the central nervous system without the excitatory jitteriness caused by caffeine. Schizandra is used in concert with other herbs to promote healthy skin, purify the blood, improve memory, concentration, coordination and endurance. Schizandra has also been used to help maintain sexual energy and function in men and women, improve vision, protect against radiation, prevent infection and improve the health of the adrenal glands.

Yumberry, Myrica rubra, also known as yang-mei (meaning “mountain peach”) is a fruit native to East Asia with a raspberry-like appearance. Yumberries are rich in vitamin C, carotene, thiamine, and riboflavin, as well as antioxidants such as oligomeric proanthocyanidins that are responsible for the fruit’s bright color, and may battle free radicals, lower blood pressure, protect heart health, reduce bad cholesterol, protect eyesight, and strengthen cell membranes.
