During the last twenty years sugar consumption in the UK has rocketed by more than 30 percent to an incredible 1.25 pounds per person, per week. Robert Lustig, professor of clinical paediatrics at the University of California, published an article in February 2012, which underlined the toxic effects of sugar and argued that our increase in sugar consumption is partly to blame for the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. And the United Nations estimates that these so-called NCDs are now responsible for some 63 percent of global deaths.
