Using Cacao Butter and Coconut Oil For Healthier Skin and Hair

Did you know that –

  • Skin cell renewal can slow down with age
  • Hair growth is faster in winter and slows down again each summer
  • A skin cell takes a four week journey from being a soft squishy cell at the bottom of the pile to being a flat dry disc at the top, ready to be shed
  • Your skin absorbs more in the evening than in the morning

The external seasons and environmental conditions also play a part in your skin’s natural process. For example in the winter, skin may produce more oil to combat the dryness caused by the weather, layers of warm clothing or central heating.

Your hair too, needs treatments too if it is exposed regularly to harsh environments. Nourishing oils and hair masks help to repair hair damage.

Treat your skin kindly with some of the do-it-yourself beauty recipes below to keep your skin and hair gorgeous and glowing.

Spicy body butter

50g raw cacao butter
50g raw coconut oil
10 drops of frankincense oil
10 drops of ginger oil

Melt the two butters gently together in a bowl which is standing in another bowl of hot water. Once melted, set aside to cool for approximately half an hour, then add 10 drops of cinnamon essential oil, 10 drops of frankincense oil and 10 drops of ginger oil. Place bowl in the fridge and whisk every now and then as it cools and hardens. Once firm, whisk firmly into a nice, fluffy body butter. Decant to a glass jar and use daily, preferable before bed so your skin can absorb those lovely nourishing oils.

Hot oil treatment for harassed hair

1 tablespoon of raw coconut oil or jojoba oil
10 drops of pure patchouli essential oil

Warm up the oil by placing it in a small dish stood in warm water or use a mini-fondue set. Once warm (but not too hot), add the essential oil and start to massage into the hair starting at the tips as they are usually the driest and most damaged part of the hair. Leave the treatment in the hair for as long as you can; at least for half an hour but ideally overnight. Wash out with your usual hair wash and dry gently.
