Why You Should Exfoliate Your Face Weekly by The Organic Bunny

We all know that we should be exfoliating our skin each week but what most do not know is exactly how or why this is a key part of a well-rounded skin care routine! Because I like to keep things short, simple and to the point, this will be a quick blog on all things exfoliation written alongside my right-hand woman Alexandra, the Organic Bunny esthetician so you know you are getting professional tips always! Below I will outline why I exfoliate and then lay out the best exfoliation for your skin type, including how often you should be using them.

Why I Exfoliate My Skin-

  • Removes Dead Skin Cells- If you find that your skin is dull, dry or patchy, you may need to incorporate a more routined exfoliation into your skin care regime. Exfoliating your face not only leaves the skin silky soft and smooth, it also helps to remove the old, dead skin cells that are just hanging out there getting in your way. By removing the old, you leave room for the new, healthier cells to show.
  • Helps Your Skin Care Work Better- You would not realize this at first but by removing all of that dead skin and build up that sits on the surface, you are now making it easier for your skin care to actually work! If you find that your nice skin care items are not working as well as you had hoped, it may be due to dead skin cells literally blocking their ability to absorb. This includes all of your products- cleansers, eye creams, serums and lotions!
  • Reduces Breakouts- When you exfoliate the skin, you are also helping to keep your pores super clean which can reduce breakouts! However, if you have active acne, you should exfoliate the skin with caution as it can cause the bacteria to spread or further irritate you. Opt for a botanical acid form of exfoliating instead of a physical scrub that may further disturb the skin. Also, because acne has abnormal cell turnover, it often can be caused by the build up in your pores.
  • Softens Fine Lines- Because dead skin building up over time can lead to more dramatic looking fine lines, exfoliating can soften them by removing the extra layers that are exaggerating the lines.
  • Makeup Sits Better- Now that you have a more smooth and soft face with all dead and flaky skin removed, you better believe that your makeup will now apply like a dream! One of the most common complaints I get is that makeup is clinging to dry patches and exfoliation can absolutely help with that.
  • Clears Pores- While pores cannot actually “shrink” despite many saying they can, you can still keep pores cleaned out which leads to an overall smaller appearance. The more build up in your pores = larger pore appearance. The less build up in your pores = smaller, more cleaned out and smooth appearance. Cleansing your face alone will not always be enough to deeply clean out pores.
  • Brighten Sun Spots- For those that have sun damage or hyperpigmentation, exfoliating is a great way to lighten the damage over time. This will not happen overnight, however, if you are consistent, you will see an overall brighter complexion, especially if you pair a Vitamin C Serum alongside it! To really see results you must commit to a strict and consistent routine as pigments, especially older pigments, can be very stubborn to lighten.
  • Slower Cell Turnover– As we age, our cell turnover does slow down which is why it’s helpful to exfoliate to help ourselves out when our natural turnover may have slowed down.

Because not one facial exfoliant works for all, I wanted to then break down the very best ways to exfoliate per skin type below.
