Potassium Iodide (KI) is a pure, medical-grade form of stable iodine that helps protect your thyroid gland from radioactive iodine exposure during nuclear events. Used by emergency services worldwide, KI works by saturating the thyroid with stable iodine, thereby blocking the uptake of harmful radioactive iodine isotopes. When taken in proper doses, KI offers crucial protection for the thyroid, especially during the first 24 hours of exposure.

Your thyroid cannot distinguish between radioactive and non-radioactive iodine, and will absorb both unless already saturated. Potassium Iodide ensures your thyroid is "full" of stable iodine so it will not absorb radioactive material. This supplement is essential for emergency preparedness and can be safely stored long-term.

KI is especially important for infants, children, pregnant women, and young adults, whose thyroid glands are most sensitive to radioactive iodine exposure. One dose protects the thyroid for 24 hours. Repeat dosing should only occur under the guidance of public health officials or a medical professional. Adults over 40 are generally not advised to take KI unless high-level exposure is expected.

Add 1 level tablespoon (26 grams) of Potassium Iodide powder to one liter (34 oz) of water. Shake thoroughly until dissolved. This creates a less-than-saturated solution containing 130 mg per 5 mL (1 teaspoon).

Suggested Emergency Dosage:

Adults (including breastfeeding women): 130 mg (5 mL / 1 tsp)

Children (3–18 years): 65 mg (2.5 mL / ½ tsp), or full adult dose if over 150 lbs

Children (1 month–3 years): 32 mg (1.25 mL / ¼ tsp)

Newborns (birth–1 month): 16 mg (0.63 mL / ⅛ tsp)

Use only during confirmed radioactive iodine exposure. A single dose is typically sufficient for 24 hours. Repeat only if directed by authorities. Avoid repeat dosing in newborns and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
